Atlantic Road

The Atlantic Ocean Road or the Atlantic Highway – National Tourist Route and the most beautiful road in the world! It was opened on 7 July 1989 and was declared a construction of the century in Norway.

This highway is 8.3 kilometers in length – section of County Road 64. It runs through an archipelago in Eide and Averoy in More og Romsdal, Norway, passes by Hustadvika, an unsheltered part of the Norwegian Sea, connecting the island of Averoy with the mainland and Romsdalshalvoya peninsula. It is built on several small islands and skerries.

The route Atlantic Road is a kind of zigzag, passing through the set of islets and reefs. The route was conceived as a railway in the early 20th century, but the building was not destined to be realized. Planning of the road was began in 1970. August 1, 1983 the construction was started.

Currently, it is a real cultural heritage of Norway. The number of tourists is increasing every year. In addition, the car commercials are often filmed in these picturesque places. The highway is officially declared one of the most beautiful roads in the world, and it proudly bears the title of “construction of the century” in Norway.

There is also a well-known Storseisundet Bridge here. It is built so that it makes a strong bend because of the special landscape of the local area. Side view of the bridge looks frightening. It seems as if just behind the rise it should be a terrible precipice, but this is just another zigzag of the Atlantic Road – another reason which makes it one of the most spectacular roads in the world!

Meanwhile,  when we marvel at the beauty of the landscape with its awesomely magnificent  spectacle of the passing cars, this road is also one of the most dangerous. The drivers balance on the verge here, because the power of ocean waves hit the bridge and make the road surface slippery. But nevertheless, the design of the road is really impressive!
