Bourtange. Netherlands

One of the most interesting sights in the world is located in the Netherlands. It’s called “Fort Bourtange” or “Star Fort”. The fortress was founded in 1580 by the order of William the Silent in the village of the same name, in the north-eastern part of the Netherlands in the municipality of Vlagtwedde near Groningen.

Fort Bourtange has a population of about 300 people. This is a common village, but it has one distinctive feature. If you look at an aerial view on this Fort and the surrounding area, you can clearly see a huge multifaceted green star.

Initially, the “star” was planned as a defensive structure. In those days, the Netherlands fought for independence from the Spanish Empire. “Eighty Years’ War” – the Netherlands bourgeois revolution – was raging in the country. In 1607, the fortification was strengthened. Subsequent years, this place has undergone various changes. Bastion fortification system replaced the medieval fortification. It is an earthen rampart with bastions and ravelins, often supplemented by a moat. Such a system of fortifications has a star shape. Since that time, such “star” constructions began to appear in Europe. Fort Bourtange was built to defend the only road between Germany and Groningen.

All these years, the Fort has undergone various changes. In 1672, the fortress has experienced its last battle. It continued to be a part of the defensive network on the border with Germany, and in 1851 it has become a village as superfluous. In the 60s of the last century it was decided to restore this unusual structure. Tall trees grew again, water moats were dug, the barracks were built anew, menacing cannons have also found their place here.

Today, there are museums and historical exhibitions. You can see the theatrical battles, telling the history of the fort. Such representations are held every year and attract many tourists from around the world. Frequent festivals, wedding ceremonies and various performances are normal events here. It is a true open-air museum, and each resident of the village can be considered as a kind of employee.

This place will please any holidaymaker – there are cozy cafes, fabulous bridges, brick houses and green lawns – an amazing natural architecture!
