Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers. France
Castle Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers is located in Les Trois-Moutiers, Poitou-Charentes region, Department of Vienne, France. This building is known since the XIII century. With each passing day it is more and more turning into ruins, and such a unique castle under the weight of experienced history literally becomes dust.
Twice Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers became the English property, and twice it was returned under the wing of France. During the French Revolution, it was destroyed. At the beginning of the XIX century, a wealthy merchant decided to restore the castle, which by that time was abandoned. He completely repaired it, revived the vineyards and in 1870 it was transferred to Napoleon III.
In 1932, Baron Lejeune Edgar set central heating in Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers. In the same winter, a terrible fire broke out in the castle. Only the chapel, several outbuildings and a dovecote could avoid the deadly fire. The damage was catastrophic. The library of rare books, the tapestries, the frescoes, the antique furniture and the valuable paintings were irretrievably lost.
In the 1980s, the forest surrounding the castle and the land were sold to the French bank, which in its turn has sold it later piece by piece in order to earn money. Thus, the land around the castle, the moat, utility rooms – everything belongs to several different owners, and now what used to be the family estate once has been sawed into separate parts. So no one wants to invest in the restoration. Neither the owner nor the social movements can’t find an investor for the reconstruction of the castle, and the government claims that it is not their business.
Today, the estate expects the recognition as a “historical monument”, which has to be protected by the state. It is the last hope for the building to stay alive. If the initiative does not succeed, ten years later the castle will be replaced by a pile of stones.
