Danger of Bolton Strid. England, UK

Mysterious Bolton Strid is a popular stream, but it has a bad reputation. Furthermore, it is considered to be one of the most dangerous traps of nature. This picturesque mountain stream is located in the north of England, in the county of Yorkshire, between Barden Tower and Bolton Abbey.

In fact, this stream is part of the River Wharfe. The name of the river originates from the Old English word ‘weorf’ which can be translated as “winding river”. It is about 97 km long with a width of about 10 meters. Reaching the region Bolton Abbey, the water flow abuts to a narrow gap. Thus, the river is gaining a tremendous speed and depth. However, this narrow gap is only an illusion. The famous creek hides a large number of underground caves and tunnels, so it is very difficult to determine depth of the Bolton Strid.

So, calm smooth surface of the water lures to come closer, but powerful underwater currents have already taken many innocent lives. An unknown force, such a dangerous precipice is capable instantly to drag to the bottom anyone who gets into it, or make you get lost in the tunnels. It is noteworthy that not a single drowned man wasn’t found. History can’t name the survivors who were trapped into the Bolton Strid.

Many fearless tourists think they can easily jump over it or simply pass on the stones. Be conscious and do not play with fate – danger warning signs are hung on trees throughout the county. People are genuinely surprised, because the creek looks quite harmless. The banks look extremely close to each other, but the rocks are so unreliable and slippery, that your attempts won’t worth it not to surface never again.
