Enchanted Well. Brazil
Chapada Diamantina is one of the most beautiful national parks in Brazil. It is located in the heart of the state of Bahia. This place is an excellent example of where you can enjoy nature, peace and clean air. You can find hummingbirds, several species of parrots, capybaras, and small lizards. The mountainous areas are inhabited by such rare species of endangered animals like jaguars and pumas. Here are magnificent mountain scenery, rivers, rapids, waterfalls, caverns and transparent pools. One of such places deserves special attention.
Approximately 400 km from the state capital, Salvador, there is a wonderful place called Poco Encantado or Enchanted Well. This is a huge sunken pool in the cave, which is located at a depth of about 37 m. To see all the beauty of the crystal clear blue water you have to go down for 80 meters by a steep descent of the cave. The water is so clear that you can see the foundation of mountains and trunks the ancient trees at the bottom of the lake.
If you decide to visit this “enchanted” place, it is recommended to come in the period from April to September. The real miracle explaining the name of the pond happens every day from 10:30 to 12:30, when a direct sunlight that seeps through the cracks in the cave reaches the water surface and creates a refracted ray. When the light penetrates through the crack of the mountain, it gives the water a soft blue reflection. It fills the lake soft azure glow, lighting up the well to the bottom.
Bathing is strictly prohibited. This fascinating spectacle attracts too many people. Government of Brazil protects this geological wonder very carefully, therefore is forced to limit and control access to the unique pond. Visiting of the Enchanted Well is possible only being a part of the organized group. Try to book the ticket in advance because the amount of tourists who want to see the well is very large.
