Detian Falls. China. Vietnam
Détiān Falls (or Ban Gioc Falls) – the widest waterfall in Asia and the second-wide in the world. It is located on the border of two states – China and Vietnam, and occupies the honorable fourth place among the bordering waterfalls, conceding only to the Brazilian-Argentinean Iguazu, African Victoria, the American-Canadian Niagara Falls.
Its main part lies on the territory of Southern China. Vietnam owns only a few streams. The Chinese karst hills of Daxin County and the Quây Sơn River of the Vietnamese province of Cao Bằng form this natural miracle. It is often called one of the most beautiful waterfalls of the Asian continent.
The flow of water collapses simultaneously from three rocky ledges 120 meters high. During the rainy season, merging into a single stream, Detian forms a powerful water avalanche with a width of up to 208 m. In spring and summer it is especially wonderful here – the triumph of life, natural freedom and harmony, the greatness of the seething waters, the misty veil of the smallest splashes.
The Detian Falls and its surroundings are a popular tourist attraction with a well-developed infrastructure. Landscapes of the Leiping Stone Forest near the waterfall attracts by its unusualness, and next to it you can find an arduous Tonglin Gorge, which has preserved many endemic plants that grow only here and nowhere else. In the lower reaches of the transnational waterfall, calm waters form a picturesque lake – a favorite tourist destination. Here you can ride on a bamboo raft, swim and admire the picturesque surroundings from the observation platforms. The most successful time for visiting the waterfall is the period from November to April, when the water level is maximum. In addition to this, tourists are offered to visit cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops. The windows of the local hotels offer stunning views of the waterfall.
Due to the fact that the Detian Falls is situated directly on the border between China and Vietnam, during the Sino-Vietnamese war, Chinese troops were deployed in its vicinity. Long disputes over the border between the two countries were conducted since 1979 and were finally resolved only in 1999.
