Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park
This is not graphics of the fiction movie, this is a natural wonder, which is located in Gansu Province, Zhangye City, Danxia, China. Its full name sounds like “Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park”. Danxia Landform means “pink cloud”. But these mountains shimmer with rainbow colors.
These colored mountains of China are known around the world. Their formation began many millions of years ago and became a result of the accumulation of large amounts of sandstone and other mineral deposits. These deposits were slowly oxidized under the influence of air and water. This was the reason for such unusual riot of colors.
According to the estimates of scientists, this mountainous area was formed in the Mesozoic era. Special studies have shown that many fossils of dinosaurs and remains of plants of that period are hidden in the Danxia Landform.
Thousands of years ago, there was a thriving city of Zhangye on this place. It was considered to be one of the richest in the country. The Great Silk Road passed through this area. But the merchants were more attracted not by the huge trade network, where you can buy everything and more, but by a place of unearthly colored landscapes. Over time, the Silk Road was abandoned and the so popular colored mountains were forgotten.
Thanks to Zhang Yimou, one of the famous Chinese film directors, who shot one of the scenes of his film in 2009, Zhangye, as well as its main attraction, has become a favorite route of thousands of tourists again.
These incredible mountains are multi colored like a rainbow. You can find shades of terracotta, turquoise, lemon, emerald, sand, deep blue colors. Diverse precipitation, a huge cluster of red sandstone and centuries of erosion of soil, layering and interacting with each other, have formed such unbelievable “pictures”, reminiscent of the sea waves.
Similar landscapes you can find in Australia, Western America and Central Europe. But eyewitnesses claim that the Chinese mountains can’t be compared with any other. In addition, Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park is home to many rare animals and plants. In 2010 this facility was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
These places are equipped for hiking – walking trails and special viewing platforms were built here so that you can enjoy all the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.
